Annals of stupid things
You’ll have to indulge all of these music posts, folks. This one actually has a point.
So you may have seen commercials for this new TV adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You on ABC Family. One of the great things about the original flick was the tremendous cover of Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me” by Letters to Cleo. Do you want to listen to it? Please do!
Just a great modern take on a classic tune. Covers are always a dicey proposition, so when you find one that works, you need to treasure it, and ride it as far as it’ll go. So what does ABC Family decide to do? They had Radio Disney mainstays KSM cover the cover! Do you want to listen to it? Go for it.
Am I biased? Yes. Letters to Cleo rocks; they’re a Boston band; and I have a crush on Kay Hanley. But irregardless of all that, I think I have an actual point here! Firstly, the L2C version rocks 10 times harder than the new incarnation. Secondly, the producers here had a chance to expose the youth of America to some genuinely awesome rock and roll, as opposed to a watered down retread. Letters to Cleo just went on a reunion tour. They’re out there!
Don’t get me wrong. Regular readers of Dangerous, Dirty, and Unfun will recognize how big a fan I am of all women with guitars. There should be more girl bands! But I’m also a big believer in if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
But also don’t get me wrong: I’m not implying that Letters to Cleo was fixing something that was broke when they covered “I Want You to Want Me.” I, uh, just don’t know any other way to criticize this new version. You know what I mean, right? I’m not an old man, right?

Good post sir! Kay Hanley. Fuck yes!
Don’t really enjoy the movie so much, but yeah, Letters to Cleo! Amazing.
Also, to relate to other post of yours, Alex Mac is also the star in that movie too! Did you forget?
